Things to be Considered When Looking at Crib Mattress Sizes
There are a number of crib mattresses available in the market fulfilling the various needs and requirements of
customers. Parents feel the fulfillment of providing their child with the best furniture to ensure a great
night’s sleep. But there are certain things that should be considered and kept in mind for the ideal choice of
the furniture. The most important thing is the crib mattress size.
In early days, a crib was a wooden frame with a mattress. Size was a subjective matter. Children sometimes had huge
spaces and they ended up almost feeling lost and lonely in it or in some cases they ended up being cramped up,
without space for moving. A Standard size for crib mattresses were not coined until 1974. Only after the late
seventies the size was made standard and is now followed by all crib mattress manufacturers.
You can find wide varieties of sizes for crib mattresses. The standard size for a crib mattress is 52 x 27 x 6 or 7
inches. This size is the one adopted by most crib mattress manufacturers. The depth of the crib mattress should be
about five to six inches. The size determines the shape of the mattress as some are now made to fit a round crib or
for a pack and play crib. Mattresses are also found in myriad varieties and styles.
If the depth is either ½ inch or anything less than this, do not use it. It will not be comfortable for the baby
resulting in body pain and sleepless nights. See that the size of the crib and mattress are more or less the same
length. Mattress should be firm and water proof and should feel comfortable to you, like something you would want
to sleep on.
If you think that the standard size does not suit your crib then you can custom order one for the required size.
The manufacturers of cribs offer you the best service in producing the right size mattress for your child. But, in
most cases the standard size suits almost everyone. After the size of the crib mattress is selected and you place
it in the crib, you should check for gaps or spaces between the crib and the mattress. Gaps and spaces are rarely
found in standard size cribs. But, if you do find one you can report it to the dealer. These gaps and spaces often
lead the child possibly flipping or falling out of the crib or worse, falling between the mattress and the crib
wall and suffocating.
Though many do not realize the importance of the crib mattress, you need to understand that these assist in a
child’s growth. Getting a great night’s sleep is vital for all age groups, but it plays a prominent role in the
child’s development.
Finding the right crib mattress size should be an easy thing. Take your time and make sure you get the best one for
your baby and for the crib you are purchasing.
